Why Visit Jomsom and Muktinath?

Nestled at an altitude of 3,800 meters (12,467 feet), Muktinath Temple is far more than just a religious destination. It represents spiritual harmony, natural beauty, cultural diversity, and Himalayan adventure.

According to Hindu belief, Lord Vishnu attained salvation here, making Muktinath one of the 108 Divya Desams—sacred shrines dedicated to Vishnu. Devotees believe that bathing beneath the temple's 108 holy water spouts and in the sacred ponds helps cleanse past sins and brings spiritual liberation (moksha).

For Buddhists, Muktinath—known as Chumig Gyatsa, meaning "Hundred Waters"—is equally revered. It is associated with Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) and considered a place of profound spiritual significance.

The route to Muktinath is equally captivating. Travelers pass through charming villages such as Ghasa, Tatopani, Marpha, Kagbeni, and Jomsom, each offering unique traditions, architecture, and warm hospitality. The journey showcases dramatic changes in landscape—from lush forests and waterfalls to arid Himalayan valleys shaped by centuries of wind and geology.

The highlight of the journey is the sacred Muktinath Temple.

For centuries, pilgrims have traveled from Nepal, India, Tibet, and many other countries to seek blessings at this revered site.

Religious Importance

Hinduism

Muktinath is one of the 108 Divya Desams, making it one of the holiest temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Pilgrims believe that bathing under the 108 water spouts and in the two sacred ponds helps wash away sins and leads to spiritual liberation.

Buddhism

Known as Chumig Gyatsa ("Hundred Waters"), Muktinath is also an important Buddhist pilgrimage site associated with Guru Padmasambhava. The temple symbolizes harmony between Hindu and Buddhist traditions.

The 108 Sacred Water Spouts

One of the temple's most distinctive features is the row of 108 stone water spouts, each shaped like a bull's head.

Pilgrims traditionally walk beneath all 108 streams as part of their religious practice. The water, sourced from the nearby mountains, is icy cold throughout the year and is considered sacred.

The Eternal Flame (Jwala Mai Temple)

Near the main temple is the Jwala Mai Temple, famous for its natural flame fueled by underground gas. This flame has burned continuously for generations and is regarded as a symbol of the unity of earth, water, and fire.

Kali Gandaki River

The Kali Gandaki River flows through one of the deepest gorges in the world, between the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs.

The river is also known for Shaligram (Saligram) stones, black ammonite fossils that are revered in Hindu tradition as sacred representations of Lord Vishnu.

Thakali Culture and Hospitality

The Lower Mustang region is home to the Thakali community, renowned throughout Nepal for its hospitality and cuisine.

Visitors can experience:

  • Traditional stone houses
  • Buddhist monasteries
  • Prayer flags
  • Cultural festivals
  • Local handicrafts
  • Warm community hospitality

Authentic Thakali Cuisine

A visit to Mustang is incomplete without tasting the famous Thakali Khana Set, a balanced meal typically including:

  • Steamed rice
  • Lentil soup (dal)
  • Seasonal vegetables
  • Pickles
  • Leafy greens
  • Curry
  • Yogurt (in some areas)

Today is one of the most scenic and memorable days of your Jomsom Muktinath Tour. After an early breakfast at your hotel in Pokhara, you leave the peaceful lakeside city and begin an exciting drive toward the beautiful Mustang region. As the road gradually climbs into the Himalayas, you'll experience dramatic changes in scenery, climate, vegetation, and local culture.

The journey initially follows the Pokhara–Baglung Highway before reaching Beni, the headquarters of Myagdi District and the gateway to the Annapurna and Mustang regions. From here, the road becomes more adventurous as it follows the mighty Kali Gandaki River, one of Nepal's most important Himalayan rivers and home to the sacred Shaligram fossils, which are highly revered in Hindu tradition.

As you continue north, the landscape transforms from lush subtropical forests into rugged mountain terrain. The road winds through picturesque villages, waterfalls, suspension bridges, and narrow river valleys, offering countless opportunities for photography.

Your first major stop is Tatopani, a charming village famous for its natural hot springs. Although many travelers enjoy the hot springs during longer itineraries, today's stop is usually for refreshments and a short break before continuing into the mountains.

The drive then continues through Ghasa, a peaceful village surrounded by pine forests and towering cliffs. This section marks the transition into the Annapurna Conservation Area, where the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic. Keep an eye out for waterfalls cascading down steep hillsides and colorful prayer flags fluttering in the mountain breeze.

Further along the route, you'll pass through Lete and Kalopani, two beautiful villages renowned for their spectacular panoramic views of Dhaulagiri (8,167 m), Nilgiri, Annapurna I, and Tukuche Peak. On a clear day, these snow-covered giants create one of the most breathtaking mountain panoramas in Nepal.

After stopping for lunch at a local restaurant, you'll continue toward Tukuche, a historic trading village that once played an important role along the ancient salt trade route between Nepal and Tibet. The village still preserves its traditional stone houses, narrow alleyways, and rich Himalayan heritage.

One of today's highlights is a visit to Marpha, often called the "Apple Capital of Nepal." This picturesque Thakali village is famous for its neatly paved stone streets, whitewashed houses, centuries-old monastery, apple orchards, and locally produced apple brandy, cider, dried apples, and jams. Depending on your schedule, you may have time to stroll through the village, visit local shops, or enjoy freshly prepared apple products.

Leaving Marpha behind, the road follows the wide, windswept valley of the Kali Gandaki River before arriving in Jomsom, the administrative headquarters of Mustang District. Situated at 2,720 meters (8,923 feet), Jomsom is surrounded by spectacular Himalayan landscapes, dry cliffs, and towering snow-capped mountains. The cool mountain air and dramatic scenery create a striking contrast to the lush valleys you traveled through earlier in the day.

Upon arrival, check into your hotel and enjoy some free time exploring the local market. You can visit nearby cafés, browse shops selling handicrafts and apple products, or simply relax while admiring the sunset over the Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges.

The evening provides an excellent opportunity to experience the warm hospitality of the Thakali people and enjoy a delicious traditional dinner prepared with fresh local ingredients.

Today is the spiritual highlight of your Jomsom Muktinath Tour. After an early breakfast at your hotel in Jomsom, you'll begin a scenic drive toward the sacred Muktinath Temple, passing through the historic village of Kagbeni, one of the oldest settlements in the Mustang region and the gateway to the restricted Upper Mustang.

The drive follows the breathtaking Kali Gandaki Valley, where dramatic cliffs, colorful rock formations, and snow-capped Himalayan peaks create an unforgettable landscape. Along the way, enjoy panoramic views of Dhaulagiri (8,167 m), Nilgiri, Tukuche Peak, and the rugged Mustang Himalayas.

Upon reaching Kagbeni (2,804 m / 9,199 ft), you'll have time for a short walk through its narrow stone-paved streets lined with traditional mud-brick houses, ancient monasteries, colorful prayer flags, and centuries-old Tibetan-influenced architecture. Kagbeni is also famous for the sacred Shaligram (Saligram) fossils, naturally occurring ammonite stones found in the Kali Gandaki River and worshipped by Hindu devotees as manifestations of Lord Vishnu.

Continuing uphill, you'll arrive at Ranipauwa, the gateway to Muktinath Temple. A pleasant 15–20 minute walk leads you to one of Nepal's most sacred pilgrimage sites.

Situated at 3,800 meters (12,467 feet), Muktinath Temple is revered by both Hindus and Buddhists. Hindu pilgrims visit to seek blessings from Lord Vishnu and perform ritual purification beneath the 108 sacred water spouts (Muktidhara) and in the two holy ponds, believing these acts help cleanse sins and lead to spiritual liberation (moksha).

For Buddhists, the temple is known as Chumig Gyatsa, meaning "Hundred Waters," and is closely associated with Guru Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche), making it an important site of Buddhist pilgrimage.

Don't miss a visit to the nearby Jwala Mai Temple, where a remarkable natural flame burns continuously from underground gas. This eternal flame, existing alongside flowing water, is considered one of the most extraordinary religious wonders in Nepal.

After exploring the temple complex, offering prayers, and taking in the spectacular Himalayan scenery, enjoy lunch at a local restaurant in Ranipauwa before beginning your return journey.

Instead of staying overnight in Jomsom, today's itinerary continues south through the picturesque villages of Kagbeni, Jomsom, Marpha, Tukuche, Kalopani, Lete, and Ghasa. Along the way, you can stop briefly in Marpha, Nepal's famous apple village, to browse local shops offering apple brandy, cider, dried apples, homemade jams, and other regional specialties.

As you descend into the lower valleys, the landscape gradually changes from the dry, windswept terrain of Mustang to lush forests and cascading waterfalls. By late afternoon or early evening, you'll reach the charming village of Tatopani, whose name means "hot water" in Nepali.

After checking into your hotel, you can unwind by visiting the village's famous natural hot springs (optional). Soaking in the warm mineral-rich waters is a relaxing way to ease tired muscles after a full day of sightseeing and mountain driving.

Enjoy a delicious dinner and a peaceful overnight stay surrounded by the tranquil beauty of the Kali Gandaki Valley.
